Evolving Shopper Behaviors and Retail’s New Normal

As the Covid-19 health crisis continues to have a huge impact on all of us around the World, it’s easy for those of us in retail to start to wonder how these conditions will impact shopping behaviors — both in-store and online — and which of these changing behaviors will have a lasting impact. If the social distancing conditions persist, new habits are sure to develop. In her study in the European Journal of Social Psychology, Phillippa Lally, a health psychology researcher at University College London, finds that it takes an average of two months for a new behavior to become automatic.* So, which behaviors will change? By how much? What will be the “new normal?”


Retailers were already adapting to rapid change in consumer demand and growing competition when nature offered this monumental disruption. Now, retailers and brands are shifting focus to work together to address a common issue — the health and safety of shoppers, employees, and communities. Over the last several weeks, it’s been truly inspirational to see the retail industry come together to solve unprecedented problems that the Coronavirus and social distancing has had on retail — such as supply chain, merchandising, assortment, etc.


We know the day will come when the threat to our collective wellness subsides – which will hopefully be soon. At this time, we believe most shoppers will be excited to return to their favorite stores, find their favorite items again, and look forward to browsing the aisles for new discoveries. As well, there will be opportunity to welcome new shoppers and/or engage with existing shoppers in different ways than ever before. More than anything, retailers want their shoppers to feel safe and happy to be back in our stores. Of course, LED lighting has a small part to play in delivering the feeling of safety and creating a welcoming environment for shoppers – in a 2018 independent Magnet Study, 66% of exiting shoppers noted the LED lighting — and said that it improved visibility and added to the overall appeal of the store.
